How to get a job in the solar energy sector

If you’re interested in venturing into the solar industry, follow these steps to get started:

  1.  Learn who is who in the industry

Different companies in the solar industry perform different roles. It is a good first step to understand who these companies are and how they operate.  Some examples are listed below, although this list is really just a starting point, as these are not the only players in the market.

  • Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) manufacture solar panels and inverters. While there are some Australian manufacturers, the bulk of these companies are headquartered overseas. Although that doesn’t mean that you can’t work for their offices here in Australia. These companies often offer combined engineering and sales roles which can see you supporting buyers of solar equipment in a technical capacity. Some kind of solar or industrial engineering degree will generally be required here.
  • Utility solar developers secure planning and grid connection approvals for large solar farms. They often will also then arrange finance and manage project construction. Roles with developers generally require a well-rounded skillset, including; technical understanding of solar or electrical engineering, and a knowledge of grid connection, planning, construction, contracting, and financing processes. These roles can be difficult for graduates and may be more suited for professionals with sometime in the industry already.
  • Consultancies in the solar industry perform work for solar developers, construction companies, and/or project financiers. Consultancies will employ a range of technical specialists that can focus on very specific aspects of project design, construction, and operation. They generally offer wide ranging experience and competence that the client will not have in house. They are a good starting point for engineering graduates, as these roles generally see a lot of different projects and get to work with experienced engineers for a lot of different clients across the industry. International consultancies can also see you working on projects abroad, and some may even offer international secondment opportunities.
  • solar energy consultants who help customers plan the best solar system for their circumstances, and;
  • solar panel installers who install the solar system.

Solar panel installers do not need a university degree, but do need to be licenced electricians. Solar energy consultants should ideally have a solar or electrical engineering degree, and be good at explaining the technology simply to customers.

  • Solar construction companies build large solar systems under contract for solar developers or other clients. They will usually be working on a tight schedule and are often responsible for making sure both the design and construction methodology is suitable. Graduates from engineering or project management degrees can find work managing the design and construction of large solar farms with these companies. Companies involved in solar construction usually also build other projects as well, so this can be a good place for graduates who don’t want to be only focused on solar technology, but are interested in project management, and civil or electrical engineering.
